Exercise Classes


Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic fitness program. The goal is simple: to work out, to love working out, and to get hooked. Zumba fanatics achieve longterm benefits while experiencing an exhilarating hour of caloric-burning, body-energizing, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate! The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you’ve got Zumba! Don’t forget to bring a sweat towel, comfortable clothing, athletic shoes and water.

For 30 years, Jazzercise has offered a fun exercise alternative.  Using a combination of today’s popular music and easy-to-learn dance steps, students find themselves excited about working out.  The conditioning class includes a warm-up, 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, strength training and a cool down.  The class will strengthen your heart while burning fat.

Rhythm & Motion Cardio Dance Fitness

Join us for a cardio-intense dance class that uses a variety of music from around the world, creating a captivating class filled with fun moves for each song. Along with working the body, we will also work the mind by learning simple dance routines. No experience necessary.  This class is taught by Geno Torres, 2005 IDC National Jazz Dance Gold Champion (Senior Group Division).

Powerkick's for Fitness (15 years & over)

This class is taught in a traditional format, teaching the basics of karate and jiu-jitsu. Children will learn the basics of blocking, punching and kicking with an emphasis on self-defense and bully prevention.  Children are taught positive motivation techniques as well as self-motivation, respect for others and leadership skills. Rank advancement is possible in this class.

This American Red Cross course teaches lay responders to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory of cardiac emergencies, and a variety of first aid emergencies.

Upon successful completion of course requirements, participants will receive the following certifications: "Adult & Pediatric CPR/AED" and "First Aid".

Pet First Aid

The goals of the American Red Cross Pet First Aid course are to teach participants how to be prepared for emergencies that involve a cat and how to protect themselves and the animal from further harm, injury or suffering during emergencies by teaching prompt, effective first aid actions and care.

First aid is the immediate and temporary care given to an injured animal until it can be taken to a professional veterinarian for medical care and attention.

Registration fees include a participant manual & DVD, which demonstrates how to perform many of the first aid steps described in the textbook.

Topics include:
• Symptoms and care for injuries and health conditions
• Instructions for creating a pet first aid kit & an emergency preparedness kit
• Checking a conscious & unconscious pet
• Performing Rescue Breathing, Choking, and CPR procedures for pets
• Identify a normal heart and pulse rate, breathing rate and body temperature of pets.

Upon successful completion of course requirements, participants will receive the following certifications: Cat First Aid or Dog First Aid (depending on which course you register for)

Adult CO-ED Volleyball

Come join the Southgate Recreation & Park District Co-Ed Volleyball League.  We offer a competitive, yet fun league.  Games are played on Thursday or Friday nights at the Jose Rizal Community Center and leagues are offered throughout the year.

Adult Beginning Tennis

This class is for the adult who has little or no experience playing tennis.  It is also suitable as a refresher course for those returning to the game after several years of not playing.  The class covers basic strokes such as forehand, backhand, and serving.  Students will also be taught basic singles and doubles strategies, and how to keep score.

This class is for the adult player who has some experience and proficiency in tennis.  Each student enrolled should have taken Beginning Tennis, or an equivalent class, and have a good groudstroke and understanding of basic tennis strategies.
